Blog #13: Andy Warhol

1. Why was Andy Warhol's work categorized as "Pop Art"? Give at least 2 examples of his work that help to support your reasons. Include images that you reference with your response.

Andy warhol redefined pop culture with his art, breaking boundaries of pop art and recreating definitions and art culture. The different color filters he used on a photo of Marilyn Monroe and Chairman Mao redefined color usage and propelled traditional colors to take on brighter shades in an abtract way.

2. What piece of Warhol's do you find most interesting both visually and conceptually (the idea)? Why? Include image with your response.

I like Warhol's self portraits that brings out his artistic personality with creative use of colors and contrast. It brought his striking gaze that has power to the viewer.

3. Do you feel that using photographs or images that are not created by the artist, himself/herself, is cheating? For example, Warhol used many commercial images, designs, and photographs that he did not create himself such as the Campbell soup labels and celebrity photographs like Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy. Why or why don't you feel that an artist should use found images and declare them his/her own artwork?

I feel like that is fine as long as the artist can make it distinctly different. Andy Warhol's unique artistic perspective allowed him to make the artwork different from the original which justified his use of the work, because he was able to make it "his own".
